Christine and Anthony Herrera have enjoyed another year settling into their new
surroundings in Akron, Ohio with Mia (11), Marcus (9), and Adam (5). All 3 kids competed
on a local hip hop dance team. Anthony also enjoys coaching Mia’s volleyball team and
Marcus’ basketball team. Adam has tapped into a hidden talent as an incredible cartoon
artist. Christine continues to enjoy her evolving role at Smucker’s. The family enjoyed a
few scattered celebrations of Christine and Anthony’s 40th birthdays during the year.
Though the visits to Toronto were less frequent, the Herrera’s always look forward to
spending time with family and friends at “home”.

The Yangs had a 2nd child in April 2016 in New Jersey. Baby Madison is a wide-eyed,
relatively tall dual citizen who sleeps and eats well, babbles a lot, and enjoys playing with
Benjamin (now 2.5 years old). The family just moved back to Toronto with the same
company BASF, enjoying the extended family nearby. Benjamin has finally settled into
Christ the King daycare after several changes from Hong Kong to US to Toronto. He loves
alphabet and numbers, singing aloud his favorite tunes, and make-believe playing with
his stuffed toys. At his first Christmas Concert, he stood quietly in his Santa Hat but did
not dance, sing nor cry! Stephen is also happy to be back, in the new house, and
reconnecting with his finance network in Toronto.

Pauline is continuing her graduate studies in the Far East, in her second year of a 3 years
Masters program at the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, specializing in Traditional
Chinese Medicine in supportive cancer care. Classes are all in Mandarin, in the simplified
Chinese script, a major task! She also enjoys Chinese folk dance, helping at a local
organic permaculture farm, and teaching mindfulness meditation in Nanjing.

Amy & Matt (“Mattamy”) had another busy year, with Amy back and forth from Vancouver
completing a final PhD research project, and Matt quickly building his real estate
investment business (Volition Properties Inc.) and new monthly Meetup group for Toronto
real estate investors. While finishing her PhD program in aging/dementia & technology,
Amy has enjoyed doing research consulting to inform Transport Canada’s design of more
age-friendly services. In July, Mattamy celebrated a much-belated wedding reception with
close friends at the Markham Museum. The two are now excitedly expecting their first
baby, due April 2017, on a babymoon in Maui, Hawaii just before Christmas.

Julie had an eventful and exciting 2016. She is a full-time naturopathic doctor in
Toronto’s downtown financial district, and the Executive Director of the Women's Healthy
Environments Network, a not-for-profit organization focused on environmental health

education. In her personal life, Julie is still an avid soccer player, and enjoys sailing,
music, travel and the great outdoors.

Sadly, Wai Chin’s mother Siew Yoke Thoe, passed away peacefully aged at age 93 in late
November. Her father Hooi Weng Yup, aged 98, is alert as ever, but still grieving with the
family. He still lives at Mon Sheong nursing home, where his wife had also resided. We are
so thankful for the great nursing care at Mon Sheong Scarborough.

Wai Chin celebrated her 66th birthday, volunteers at the Good Shepherd Centre weekly,
and is active in the church and choir at St. Gabriel’s. She is also Office Manager for Paul’s
neurology practice, and a hands-on, wonderful grandmother, going to New Jersey to
watch Benjamin during Madison’s delivery and in Akron Ohio for Grandparents Days at
school. In the summer, Wai Chin also attended her old school, Father Bressani’s staff
reunion (where she excelled as a high school math teacher!). She had a great time
reconnecting with old colleagues after 24 years. Wai Chin’s dedication is especially evident
in her loyal, daily care of her mother in her final weeks, and regularly visiting her father,
often taking him to the mall by bus. We pray for her and her Hooi family’s peace during
this difficult time of loss.

Paul still has a sizable neurological practice, but has recruited an associate for the
paediatric patients, the EEG lab weekly, with fellows from China, Iran, Spain,
Scarborough and York University, supervising students in clinical research projects on
new drugs for epilepsy, EEG and video-EEGs in the sleep lab biweekly, and weekly
University epilepsy seminars. Two summer research undergraduate students came from
China: a medical student from Shandong U. and a Pharmacy MSc. student from Nanjing
Chinese Medical University, the same centre where Pauline is studying TCM and
acupuncture for her MSc!
Several 2016 conferences were attended: EAEEG meeting at McGill’s Montreal
Neurological Institute MNI in February; the International Child Neurology Association in
Amsterdam in May; the American Neurological Association elected Paul to Fellowship in
Baltimore in October. The American Epilepsy Society held in Houston TX in December
gave scarce time to arrange an award-winning oil painting donation by Charles Choi to
the Epilepsy Program at the University of Toronto, December 9, with a Christmas party
enjoyed by all!

As 2016 draws to a close, we recall with gratitude all the blessings received by our
families this past year! We look back to new blessings for the Jubilee Year of Mercy just
closed by Pope Francis at St. Peter’s in Rome. We are challenged to welcome sponsored
refugees from Syria and elsewhere to Canada. The weather is tough with lots of snow this
winter but we are still so blessed.
We thank our many friends and relatives for sharing the events of 2016 with us, and we
pray for God’s blessings for the coming of Jesus at Christmas and His protection in the
New Year ahead!
